Description: Striking and highly detailed interesting 1630 Wenceslaus Hollar's copper engraved sheet featuring the House of Parliament, London, during the trial of Strafford. The Earl is shown standing in the foreground seen from behind, wearing cloak and cap, facing judges and clerks in the centre and empty throne under canopy flanked by wooden boxes for king and spectators in the background; peers and members of parliament seated in tiers on both sides.
The sheet is flanked with a key showing arrangement of court officials, attendants, etc.

Condition: Very strong and dark impression on good paper. Paper with chains. Map uncolored. Wide margins. Corners partially missing. Small foxing and browning. Small tear along the central fold, repaired on the verso. Map folded. Conditions are as you can see in the images.
Mapmaker: Wenceslaus Hollar (23 July 1607 - 25 March 1677) was a prolific and accomplished Bohemian graphic artist of the 17th century, who spent much of his life in England. He is known to German speakers as Wenzel Hollar; and to Czech speakers as Václav Hollar. He is particularly noted for his engravings and etchings. He was born in Prague, died in London, and was buried at St Margaret's Church, Westminster. In the years 1627-8, active in Stuttgart; in the period 1629-30, worked for Jacob van der Heyden's publishing house in Strasbourg; in the years 1631-32, worked in various German towns including Frankfurt where he worked with Merian; 1633-36 resided in Cologne, employed by A.Hogenberg, visiting the Netherlands in 1634; 1636 joined the service of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, with whom he travelled along the Rhine to Prague; December 1636, arrived with Arundel in London; 1644, to Antwerp after selling a number of plates to Peter Stent; 1652, returned to London, concentrating thereafter on book-illustration and cartography; 1666, named 'Scenographus regius' by the king but the Great Fire of that year brought to an end Hollar's projected view of the entire city; 1668-9, joined Lord Henry Howard on his expedition to Tangiers, but most of his late work consisted of routine illustrations for book publishers. Died in London in severely reduced circumstances.
