The Bibliographisches Institut was a major German publishing house founded by Joseph Meyer in 1826. The publishing house belonged to Joseph Meyer (1796-1856) and his son, Herrmann J. Meyer (1826-1909). The Bibliographisches Institut quickly gained prominence. It published collections of German, Greek, and Roman classics, books on historical and natural sciences, maps, engravings, and much more. Meyer’s publishing house became famous for its illustrated series “Meyer's Universum” and "Meyer's Encyclopedic Lexicon."
