It was one of the first modern popular zoological treatises. Alfred Edmund Brehm (1829-1884), was a German zoologist, natural history illustrator and writer, the son of Christian Ludwig Brehm. Through the book titled 'Brehms Tierleben', his name became a synonym for popular zoological literature. Litho by or after W. Kuhnert. Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert (September 18, 1865 - February 11, 1926) was a German painter, author and illustrator, who specialized in animal images. After illustrating the books of Alfred Brehm, he travelled to German East Africa to observe animals in their habitat and produced numerous paintings that defined Africa for many Germans of the period.
